Release: EMILYs List Endorses Sarah McBride for Congress
Wilmington, DE— Congressional candidate for Delaware’s at-large district and State Senator Sarah McBride announced today that she has earned the endorsement of EMILYs List, a national organization that helps elect Democratic pro-choice women to office. Momentum continues to build for McBride’s campaign as she also announced this week that she was endorsed by former Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General Matt Denn.
“State Sen. Sarah McBride’s career in public service has been defined by a fierce commitment to fighting for the rights of women, children, families, the LGBTQ+ community, and marginalized groups in Delaware and across the country,” said EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler. “She is a dedicated pro-choice champion who has promised to stand up to Republican extremism and work to pass federal legislation reinstating reproductive freedom and protecting access to abortion care. EMILYs List was proud to support McBride when she made history in 2020 as the first openly transgender state senator in the country — and we are thrilled to once again help her make history and become the first openly transgender member of Congress. During a time when both transgender Americans and those seeking reproductive care have been disproportionately subject to hateful legislation and violence, it is critical that we band together to affirm that everyone has the right to bodily autonomy and the right to determine the course of their futures, their families, and their lives.”
“Protecting abortion rights is a key policy priority for me and I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of EMILYs List,” said McBride. “I’m running for Congress to build on our progress in the Delaware legislature, which includes enshrining reproductive rights and the right to an abortion in federal law. We have witnessed the devastating consequences when reproductive rights are dismantled, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities and exacerbating social inequities. In the face of relentless attacks from radical politicians across the nation, seeking to erode access to safe and legal abortion, I stand resolute and unwavering alongside fellow pro-choice champions, including EMILYs List.”
McBride has been endorsed by a growing number of Delaware elected officials including Attorney General Kathy Jennings, State Auditor Lydia York, former Lt. Governor and Attorney General Matt Denn and more than twenty Delaware elected officials, community organizers, labor leaders and community and national advocacy organizations.
Members of the state legislature endorsing Senator McBride include: Senate President Pro Tempore David P. Sokola, Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman; Rep. Nnamdi Chukwuocha; Rep. Kendra Johnson; Rep. Debra Heffernan; Rep. Krista Griffith; Rep. DeShanna Neal; Rep. Sophie Phillips; Rep. Kim Williams; Rep. Paul Baumbach; Rep. Ed Osienski; Rep. Cyndie Romer; Senator Laura Sturgeon; Senator Russ Huxtable; Senator Kyra Hoffner; Senator Spiros Mantzavinos; Senator Jack Walsh; Senator Kyle Evans Gay; Senator Stephanie Hansen; and Senator Nicole Poore.
Upon her announcement, Nelson Hill with UFCW Local 27, Delaware’s largest private-sector union, said, “Working people across Delaware need a member of Congress who has a record of taking on big challenges and delivering for them -- and Sarah is exactly that leader. We are excited to join working families across the state to make Sarah McBride Delaware's next member of Congress.”
