Release: Association of Flight Attendants Endorses Sarah McBride for Congress
Wilmington, DE — Congressional candidate for Delaware’s at-large district and State Senator Sarah McBride announced today that she has earned the endorsement of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), a flight attendant union representing nearly 50,000 flight attendants at 19 airlines, and part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. This is the second major labor union endorsement for McBride, who previously announced the support of UFCW Local 27, the largest private sector union in the state.
“Sarah McBride has the tenacity and vision we need in Congress. During her time in the Delaware legislature, she played a key role in passing the state’s first private sector paid leave policy, and is committed to improving the lives of workers across our country,” said Sara Nelson, president of the AFA. “We welcome her commitment to fight for aviation safety and security, including steps to create a national banned passenger list and hold disruptive passengers accountable. Sarah’s record in the Delaware Senate shows that she understands how to work collaboratively, build power and make big things happen. That’s the kind of leader we need in Congress, and we’re proud to endorse her candidacy.”
“I thank the Association of Flight Attendants for endorsing our campaign and continuing their fight for fair wages and better workplace conditions for their members. It is clear that their tireless dedication and hard work are vital to our region's connectivity and economic growth,” said McBride. “It's important that we recognize and celebrate the symbiotic relationship between strong, unionized workforces and the continued growth of employers here in our state. Delaware's commercial airline industry is not only restarting but thriving, and it's heartening to see one of AFA's newest unionized workforces, Avelo Airlines, playing a pivotal role at our state’s only commercial airport. In Congress, I will prioritize worker rights and secure federal investments that bolster our transportation infrastructure, including our airports, which are vital arteries of our economic prosperity.”
McBride has been endorsed by a growing number of Delaware elected officials including Attorney General Kathy Jennings, State Auditor Lydia York, Delaware Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro, former Lt. Governor and Attorney General Matt Denn and more than twenty other Delaware elected officials, community organizers, labor leaders and community and national advocacy organizations.
Members of the state legislature endorsing Senator McBride include: Senate President Pro Tempore David P. Sokola, Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman; Rep. Nnamdi Chukwuocha; Rep. Kendra Johnson; Rep. Debra Heffernan; Rep. Krista Griffith; Rep. Cyndie Romer; Senator Laura Sturgeon; Senator Russ Huxtable; Senator Kyra Hoffner; Senator Spiros Mantzavinos; Senator Jack Walsh; Senator Kyle Evans Gay; Senator Stephanie Hansen; and Senator Nicole Poore.
Upon her announcement, Nelson Hill with UFCW Local 27 said, “Working people across Delaware need a member of Congress who has a record of taking on big challenges and delivering for them -- and Sarah is exactly that leader.
